Bedford county, here we come!!!

After too many delays and setbacks, we have finally secured our mountain hideaway. we have been slowly building up supplies for it over the last 6 months, and this weekend we will start transferring everything.

The previous owners told us that they had left a lot of hand tools, which was a nice surprise since that is an area that I've sort of overlooked/ignored. Weapons and food are at what we think are comfortable levels, leaving us to focus on first aid and personal hygiene items.

Since seeds seem to be a tender subject lately, I might as well add my opinion. I don't place much value on seeds, we are not set up for for gardening and we have taken 5that into account as we added to our food supplies. Down the road we may add some raised beds, but that's a ways off from now.

There is a show in Butler Sat & Sun @ the Days inn on Rt8. I think the times are 8-4 both days , but I could be wrong. If you got the time, you might as well get what's needed while you still can. Personally, I'll be looking for a deal on a comp m2 and magazines.See you there.

All is well here in the south hills of the 'Burgh. I hope everyone has made progress in preparing for any catastrophe we may face in the near future.

I have been spending a lot of time getting our site "B" ready for us and extended family who will probably show up with almost nothing to contribute. I could rant all night about that, but let's just move on to something more positive.

The only area that I seem to be deficient in is our medical supplies and that should be fixed within the first few weeks on the new year.

Our new bug out retreat

We have been talking about getting a place in the mountains for quite sometime, and it now appears to happening in the very near future. It's located about 90 miles from our home so it should be reachable under most circumstances.

This goes against what I've been saying for awhile, I have been very adamant about staying at home, and using my in laws home as a secondary site because of the short distance to our home, they have a well, and for being pretty close to us they would be difficult to find by by anyone not familiar to the area.

It's going to be just like starting over again because I don't want to reduce supplies here at the house, but some stuff will have to be relocated. Weapons and fuel will be the first purchases. I keep 30 gallons of gas here at the house and will probably do the same at the new site. In a perfect world I would have another AR-15 stashed with 4000 rounds, but I think we may have look at less expensive choices.

Food and medical supplies will be the third and fourth priorities and they shouldn't be too hard. I'm always adding to the stockpile, so a few more things here and there will add up in no time.I like where I'm at with the meds so it's just going to be a matter of shuffling things around a bit.

Molle or Lbe

Everyone seems to lean one way or the other when it comes to tactical gear, and I'm finding myself unsure of what would work best.

I have used a molle chest rig and it wasn't too bad.The vest was comfortable to wear and it was easy getting in and out of vehicles.It held 8 mags for the bushmaster, but besides the armor plate, adding anything else would've made me feel a little top heavy.I tried to add a pistol mag pouch to the front, but I think that I'll keep them on my belt.

My govt. issue lbe has been a proven friend, but it also has drawbacks to it. The side mounted pouches tend to catch when getting out of a vehicle and even getting to something on your belt can be troubling when riding in a vehicle.

Sooner or later I guess I'll have to make a decision, but until then I'm going to keep both close by.

I try not to take alot of what is posted online too seriously, but I feel that if something was to happen, this healthcare vote could be it. i think it's safe to say that we have seen enough from our so-called representatives in D.C. and what they intend to do, no matter what we the people say to them.

My family and I will be watching closely to see what may or may not unfold in the next few days. I hope you all are a the point where you will be able to provide for yourselves and your families in the very near future.

I hope everyone is nice and warm inside there home by now, or in one of the warming centers set up around the county for those without heat. Its been a hell of a day here trying to dig ourselves out from under all of this stuff, and not having any power would not make this situation any better.

It was nice to see the neighborhood pull together today, and work as a team to dig everybody out, and to check on the few elderly neighbors that we do have. Hopefully it anything worse would ever happen, we can come together again and help one another.

Shopping with sheeple

We went to our local grocery store this evening for our monthly big shopping trip. There is a big storm forecasted for tomorrow, so we had a lot of company in the aisles.

Most people around here that "panic" shop, seem to stick to cleaning out the milk, eggs, bread, and of course the jumbo packs of Charmin extra soft, so we stayed away from those aisles to avoid any conflicts over the last gallon of 2%.

The thing that I was surprised at, was the shortage of pizza rolls, and frozen waffles. Of all the things that could be wiped out, pizza rolls and waffles would not rank too high on the list on must haves.

But what if it was switched? Plenty of pizza rolls and waffles, but milk, eggs, bread, and TP were wiped out. It would have been pandemonium at Giant Eagle.

We spent this past weekend at hunting camp, and it was awesome getting away from the hectic pace of the city. Nobody else around except for a few other people getting their places ready for the next few weekends.

Now if some event would happen that would trigger a mass exodus from the cities to the countryside, I don't know if I would want to be out here with hordes of people running around the countryside armed and hungry and here's why:

1. Where to go? I know, uncle Joe"s hunting cabin, he will keep us safe,and we can shoot deer for food.

2. If uncle Joe's isn't reachable, or your unwelcome, then what?

3. No medical facilities or access to personnel.

4. Leaving home? So are 500,000 of your neighbors

5. Oh no, I forgot.........!!!!!

6. You drive an Accord/ Camry

7. People like Mayberry will also be out on the road

and the list could go on, but let's break these few down.

1. Good idea, make it seem like a camping trip at first instead of a refugee camp, but you won't be alone out in the woods, everyone else with an uncle Joe had the same idea and once all the game is killed off or run off by all of the suburbanites running through the woods and the last can of pork n' beans have been eaten, then what?

2.If you went to your vehicle right now, how much gas is in the tank? Would you have enough to get say, to a preplanned destination that was about 80 miles away, but with detours that could double your travelling time and idling in traffic will eat up what you have in the tank. Don't forget if you reach your destination, it could be under new management with no reservation for you.

3. Now I know everyone out there has superduper first aid kit, able to treat any type of injury on FEMA/NWO virus out there, but being close to some type of medical facility or personnel would a better option than relying on some farmers wife with a jar of elderberry extract and garlic oil. On our street, I know of at least four Rn's that I could count on for any emergency.

4. Imagine rush hour, and then multiply it at least four. Thousands of cars heading out of the city, with no real destination in mind. they just want out. See ya later. Personally I wouldn't mind if most of my neighbors left. It's not that I don't like them, but that leaves a lot of empty houses to go through picking over what they had left. Just like Walmart, but with better prices.

5. "Honey, I left your blood pressure medicine in the bathroom!" That could be just the beginning. It's 53 degrees in the burgh today, but who knows what next week will bring. Did you bring winter clothing even though your in a t-shirt now? How about that .45 auto you keep in the lock box under your bed? Extra ammo and mags?

6. In a perfect world we would all have an F-250 CREW CAB 4X4 with an 8' bed standing by gassed up and ready to go in a moments notice. Since this is the real world I know a lot of you are probably not in that situation and are driving something a little smaller. Do a load out exercise to see if you can fit all of your essential cargo in your vehicle.

7. Road rage with guns. People with a chip on their shoulder, and think the whole world is out to get them. This is why, out of all the reasons that I have mentioned, this one to me poses the biggest risk to you and your families safety.

Train load of military vehicles

At about 1015 today in the southside of Pgh, I saw a train roll through with about 2-300 hummers on it. They were all hard top models with armored gun turrets, but none of them had any bumper markings. Does anybody know of where these things are being built?

I went into town around 1230 to pick up the wife at work. Nothing was happening yet, but the city was ready for them and anything else that might happen. Duquesne University had police in riot gear at the entrances on Forbes Ave. and Mercy hospital had more police there than I've ever seen there out front.That vehicle with the big speaker on top was parked on the riverside of the Armstrong tunnel right up from the county jail.

As we were leaving, I drove a few blocks down 5th Ave. and a lot of the locals had chairs set out on the sidewalk, like they were waiting for the fourth of July parade. Only in Pittsburgh.

G20 and commuting

Well we are a few weeks away from the big event, and as we get closer, we need to take a look at getting in and out of the city without too much of a hassle.
I guess the "T" ( that's our commuter train) is only going to run to First Ave , but I look for that to be shut down at the last minute to keep protesters coming into the city from the south hills, and same with the bus ways to the north and east.

Stopping traffic, both vehicle and pedestrian in the southside from the hot metal bridge to the smithfield st. bridge and some type of obstacles to overcome in or around East Liberty will definitely be problems. I didn't forget about traffic from the north, because you always have problems from that direction anyway.

So my advice would be to stay as far away from dahntahn (downtown for the tourists) as you can.

Well it's been a very busy summer and I haven't been able to post as much as I wanted to, but with school just around the corner, I can get back to normal.

The G20 summit is going to take place here next month which should bring with it a host of problems for anybody who works in or around downtown. Security checkpoints, road closures, and of course the demonstrations are going to be a treat to deal with when you're trying to get home.

People supposedly have already begun to show up around the city to prepare for the demonstrations and I have even heard of some camping out in the remote parts of North Park and squatting in some buildings around the city.

I would hope by now most of you out there have started to prepare even if it is just a few more cans of veggies thrown in the cart when your shopping and a case or two of water in the garage. It isn't much, but it's a start in the right direction.

I read a lot of different blogs dealing with prepping and related topics, and some of the things I have come across are in my opinion, are totally crazy. I would try to stay away from any site except for maybe a chuckle, that has anything to do with death towers, death rays, FEMA camps, or nazi submarines.

Escape from New York

My wife and I are going to NYC tomorrow on a bus for a 24 hour shopping spree ( her idea not mine). I have been putting alot of thought as to what to take on our trip that would help us in a SHTF scenario.

We are taking a tour bus so anything we bring will have to be carried in a backpack that cannot be so big that it would draw unwanted attention, or too small to be of any practical use.

Maps of the city and a Pa state map are definitely must haves along with a flashlight, small first aid kit, bottled water, compass ,and other necessities that I'm sure most of us could agree on.

My biggest concern is weapons. What would I be able to carry on me in the city that would be legal to have? I don't have a concealed weapons permit, not that it would be valid in NYC if I did, so firearms are out. Knives would work, but I can't get too carried away here and try to walk around Times Square with a 14" bowie knife strapped to my belt. I have a 6" folding buck knife that I'll have on me at all times, but I do want to have something else with me that will be able to stop or at least delay an attacker. Maybe one of those ASP expandable batons neatly tucked away into the backpack would do the job. Let me know if you have any other ideas.

A new place for equipment

I have to pass this on to anyone in western Pa who is looking for military surplus or camping supplies. I found a surplus store in California,Pa that has one of the best selections of whatever type of military stuff you may be looking for. I was able to pick up items that I didn't think I would be able to get my hands on. Camo netting, tents, mre's, and gas masks were just a few of the things that I was pleasantly surprised to see, and the prices were not too bad. I hope this helps someone.

With everything that is going recently,GM, North Korea, and the disastrous financial situation our country is in, this should be a very interesting summer for us all.

I definitely think that in a very short time, events will happen that will effect us all, and our own levels of preparedness to include our mental and physical along with the beans, bullets, and band aids will be tested. Don't take this as some doomsday prediction, or imaginary hype, something just doesn't feel right.

It wouldn't hurt to have a few extra items in your buggy at checkout, I know we have upped the amount of storable foods and it could be the difference between my children going to bed hungry or not in the near future. Water purification should also be addressed before pretty much anything else.

Weapons to defend your family and home should have already been purchased. If not go get a 12 gauge and a as many rounds of buckshot that you can. Forget about assault rifles at this point, the prices are way too high to justify them.

I could sit here all night typing out yet another list of things needed for survival, but I think food, water, and weapons pretty much sums it up. If you have these things, you are off to a good start and probably better off than most people who haven't a clue or choose to ignore the warnings.

In closing I would like to add that as warlord I'm claiming as my territory all of the lands formally known as Bethel Park, South Park, Whitehall, South Baldwin, Finleyville, and McMurray. All hail me!

I like this store because there isn't the clutter that you would find in normal grocery stores. We were in and out of there in less than 30 minutes with enough supplies for another 3-4 weeks and it was pretty easy on the wallet too.

This post started out as a medical kit post because I had just finished getting our family medical supplies up to the level that I wanted , but then this swine flu junk started and it kind of pushed my band aids and antiseptic post to the back of the line.

My better half works at one of the local hospitals and as of today there hasn't been any reports of the flu there. Personnel at the hospital have been told that if anyone is showing the symptoms of the flu. give them a face mask and send them to the E.R.

So far it doesn't seem to be a big issue around here, but time will tell if this is the big flu pandemic or not. In any event ,if you haven't started to put away any food I would suggest starting right now. The stores get a little crazy if there is snow in the forecast, just imagine what it will be like if or when the outbreak gets any worse.

Well like hundreds of others did today,I braved the weather and headed downtown. For being a workday and pretty crappy outside, there was a pretty good sized crowd. Quinn and Meakam did a good job of getting the crowd fired up. There were a few vendors selling pins and flags, and they seemed to be doing pretty well. Hopefully we will see more of these demonstrations soon and hopefully they will grow in size.

There are definitely a few nut jobs out their on the web and I seem to be seeing more of them lately screaming about all sorts of conspiracies with aliens, cults, and of course , the return of the dreaded black helicopters. As I read these things, all I can think about is a skit from SNL years ago with William Shatner spoofing a Star Trek convention. He gets up in front of the costumed crowd and says to them "GET A LIFE!!!!!".

Preparing for a disaster, be it natural or man made is one thing, but some of you are really out there. I got nothing else to say about this.

My family recall system

If something would happen right now, would you be ready to go? How about your spouse and children? Are they going about with their lives, or are they sitting around waiting for the trigger event to happen. As the father of a teenager I can tell you that my social princess is out and about doing her normal activities either at the mall or at a friends house,basically as far away from mom and dad as possible. You won't find my wife at home either , she is going on with her normal day to day activities just like I am and I hope the rest of you are, until something triggers us to move to the first phase of our emergency preparation action plan(s).

I have drilled it into my families heads that constant communication is the most important thing that I care about when they are not at home. We constantly in touch with each other with our cellphones, to let each other know where we are at, and who we are with. I get a call from my daughter every two hours or if she leaves her present location. We have had this rule forever and it has become part of her normal daily routine. She also has to carry four quarters on her in case her phone quits, which has been known to happen from time to time. Failure to follow this results in a nonexistent social life.

My lovely wife takes a little bit more to get her to follow my instructions on this , but she has been better at it lately due to certain things that have been happening such as the shootings in New York and more recently this morning in Pittsburgh.

Bottom line is ,you need to be able to get to your family if or when something should happen. All the prepping in the world would become meaningless for me if I didn't have my family with me.

Caching supplies

I think I've found a good spot to preposition a few things in case I can't get to my main stash for whatever reason(s). Behind my home is a fairly large cemetery, which is next to a convent. The best part is that 2/3 of the land is overgrown with trees and brush and pretty much has been left alone by the owners. Now I don't see the cemetery rapidly expanding in the near future, and I think I can stash my equipment with little difficulty.

Time to make new friends

One idea that I've had is to establish a type of chain of people in my area to establish a safety net in the event they or myself get caught out in an area that is less than friendly, sort of like those whales tale signs for children to go to if they are being bothered. This chain could also help in establishing some sort of trade route for goods,services, and information.

So, if you are in the western Pa area, and this sounds like something you would be interested in, let me know.

I have been talking to a few of my neighbors recently about forming some type of a neighborhood watch as sort of a round about way of getting them prepared for the possibility of us being left to defend ourselves here within the near future. For the most part I seem to be spinning my wheels, nobody has shown any real interest in doing anything that takes them out of their routine or their comfort zone. My weekend

My wife and I took a road trip this past weekend to Erie for a much needed break from our hectic schedules. Although we were heading in a direction that we most likely wouldn't be going if we had to evacuate, I still tried to imagine What this major interstate would look like like with thousands of vehicles streaming out of the city heading for wherever. Within this snarling mess of vehicles, there's bound to be fender benders, mechanical breakdowns, flat tires, and the list could go on but I'm sure you get the idea.

Now whenever there is something happening along the roadway in terms of accidents and such, alot of people, and you can even include me in this, slow down to rubberneck and by doing this causes the cars behind to slow down,etc,etc. Now what if the vehicles involved in this mess can't be moved ? Forget about calling a tow truck. Are people going to get out to help the disabled motorists? I doubt it. So now we have blocked lanes and a panicked mob not moving. I guess you could compare it to trying to leave a stadium parking lot after a game with nobody wanting to let another car in front of them. I know I get frustrated pretty easy when I encounter a**hole drivers and would like to drag them out of their car for a good beating.

Now let's arm these people and see what happens to our traffic jam. I don't know about you , but I want know parts of anything to do with that mess. It could possibly end up looking like the highway between Kuwait City and Baghdad that we saw on tv during the first gulf war, burnt bodies and vehicles. This scene could happen on any roadway, not just an interstate.

Well I just return from my weekend getaway to see that I have gotten some comments from some of you regarding my plans for whatever is coming. As in any one point of view, there will be people who will have a different one than yours. Its no different than critiquing a quarterback or coach after a questionable play. I don't claim to have all the answers, and I'm always looking to correct any missteps I may take getting my families plans in order, because that is why I'm doing this. For the ones I like to refer to affectionately to as my little tax deductions.

You know it's going to happen. People will take something that is not theirs and there won't be anyone to stop them from tearing up the local Walmart or beer dist. and /or liquor store. I can almost picture it, two drunks fighting over a case of warm beer and a bag of smashed pretzels.

My neighborhood is pretty quiet,not much happens around here that would warrant media coverage and I don't think COPS would want to film an episode here. Within four miles of my home is the city limits of Pittsburgh, and I believe the source of the majority of the looters will come from. I don't want to sound racist by saying this, but I would bet you my last can of pork n beans that there will be groups of the city dwellers coming out to the 'burbs looking for food, fuel,
booze, etc. These groups need to be stopped as quickly as possible by any means necessary. I'm not saying shoot 'em and chop off their heads, but a strong deterence must be established.

Let's assume that our police will be out of the picture due whatever reason, we as a community will have to take place to ensure the safety of our families and property.Sentry posts, roving patrols, and signs and nooses swinging from trees should get the point across to any group thinking about coming around us.

I have stated that my family will stay put, and not join the refugee convoy headed to greener pastures, and I'm pretty sure we won't be alone.

We would probably benefit by joining up with others in our community for safety and helping oeach other with whatever we can. A central location that could be easily defended and that offers protection from the elements definately be a wise choice. Looking around my community, and I'm sure it's pretty much the same everywhere else, churches seem to fit in to this plan.

Most churches around here are brick/stone construction , with decent views of the surrounding area. Now I know you'e probably thinking that a church may be too big of a building ,or what do you do about the clergy ?

Well my thinking is to bring more people into the group that would benefit us all . People such as medical personel, skilled laborers, or anyone else that shows interest in helping . The members of the clergy can offer the spiritual guidance and hope that alot of people look for in a time of crisis.

Who knows?

Its alot to think about . So many scenarios, so many choices. I hope that I'm making the right ones for my family. As a parent, I want to make sure my children are safe and don't go to bed hungry. It would be alot less stressful if it was just me, throw a few things in a pack and live a road warrior existence, fighting off bandits ,but I wouldn't change a thing in my life.

I know my family will be safe.

Today I spent some time going over my exit routes out of the suburbs to our family rally point south of the city. As I drove a few different ways to the objective, it occurred to me that if/when something does happen and we do need to un-ass ourselves, maybe we shouldn't.

The roads around here cannot handle everyday rush hour traffic, let alone a mass exodus of people fleeing whatever has happened.We would probably be better off waiting it out at our home and then decide our next move. I have made sure that we do have enough food, water , fuel , and weapons on hand here just in case we couldn't or don't need to leave.

Personally , I don't want to leave my home . The best chance to replentish supplies through trade or bartering will have to happen in an area where there are people to trade with. My neighborhood is in an area that is off by itself, but still close to everything.
